Summer Vibe Art Contest at Menlo Summerfest
The Summer Vibe art contest is one of the many features of the Menlo Summerfest, coming up July 15-16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Santa Cruz Avenue in Menlo Park.
The contest is open to all of the talented artists participating in this this year’s festival. [See some of the artist submissions below.]
Artists are asked to express their own, signature summer vibe for the chance to win a $300 first prize or $200 second prize. Two first place and two second place prizes will be awarded in fine arts and crafts categories. The contest is sponsored by the Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce.
“Each artisan will have an opportunity to take part in the contest and translate via their medium what Summer Vibe means to them,” explained Director of Pacific Fine Arts Festivals Dana Hale-Mounier. “Painters might portray a relaxing beach scene, while a clothing designer might construct a billowy dress for a leisurely summer date. A glass jeweler might blow colorful beads into a whimsical necklace.”
Artists will be asked for detailed descriptions of their work, explaining what “summer vibe” means to them and how they translate that through their specific mediums. Participants will display their artwork in their booths for judging on Saturday morning, and it will be available for sale to the public.
“We noodled ideas in-house and looked at other national events for a starting point concept we could develop into our own,” Hale-Mounier noted. “The contest’s final details crystalized after we solicited input from some of our artist friends. We’re thrilled that Menlo Park Chamber has encouraged this contest and is generously sponsoring the monetary awards. Handcrafted ribbons will be included with the two main awards, and there also will be honorable mention awards.”
Hale-Mounier is excited about the new contest, and expects it to enrich Menlo Summerfest. “This festival is a such a fantastic, family-oriented event with summer fun for everyone,” she said. “It’s special for many reasons…the community to which it is presented, their enthusiastic support, the intimate feeling of Santa Cruz Avenue, the wonderful venue of the tree-lined streets downtown, and the wide variety of merchants.”

Summer Vibe means to me: going the beach. So when I painted this work, I put in all the activities and people that I see who have come to the beach on a hot summer day. Some surf, or ride bikes, or have picnics, or just sunbathe and read. Others sail, swim, or relax and more. Each and everyone has a feeling or vibe about how they want to experience summer.

For me, summer is that light that remains within us in the darkest times; a promise of life, growth, fruition, and joy. I believe Camus captured this eloquently with his words and so we've carved them into stone.

I have spent many summer vacations scuba diving in various parts of the world, but one of my favorite dives was a sunny, clear-water day off Catalina Island in California. California has a 24/7 SUMMER VIBE and that day was no exception. The water was warm, the Garibaldi fish were colorful, and the kelp forest was waving with the current against the dark background of the deep ocean.

Summer brings light, serenity, and beauty. Happy, blissful walks with your loved ones. That's what paradise is.
Somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, I think of a place where I can't wait to be enveloped again. It's a place where the blue of the sky, and the kiss of the briny air truly make you feel alive and loved.
The reflection of the turquoise water, the waves gently caressing the shore, I close my eyes I can hear the whispering palm trees, the seagulls softly gliding in the air. This imagery, all comes together to inspire me to create this painting of the Summer Vibe. I hope you can feel it too.

Having grown up in the South Bay of Southern California I was never too far from the ocean. Summer meant spending time at the beach basking in the sun, hanging out with friends, wiggling your toes in the sand and wading in the warm water. The fresh smelling air and sea breeze are not far from my memory and evoke the ultimate summer vibe.

I picked the picnic basket because of its vibrant colors and the floral print fabric used which say summer. And picnic is just one of the fun things to do during summer.

Living and working in mid-San Francisco Peninsula, I am fortunate to have the Californian poppies dance with the summer vibes where ever I go. We Californians have these delicate and refreshing state flowers grace our gardens, dot our roadsides, and highlight our famous sunshine everywhere they thrive. I am confident that the poppies conjure vibes of summer for many others in the area. I have carefully depicted all steps of a poppy flower's development in this painting to symbolize the stages a person's life. I have also created a juxtaposition of meticulous realism right against broad-stroked abstraction to have the stylistic heterogeneity echo the cultural diversity of San Francisco Bay Area.

Swimming, especially in the ocean, is a great way to stay cool in the Summer, and is what I think of when I think of the Summer Vibe. The swimmer in the painting is refreshed with a swim in a beautiful tropical paradise.

My painting "Music in the Garden" reflects the Summer Vibe by portraying abundance in the summer garden. Fruits and flowers are plentiful. Farmer's markets are booming. And the best way to end any summer day is in one's own garden, with a chilled glass of wine – listening to the soft music of happy birds, and taking in all the beauty which nature has bestowed upon us.

For me summer time is the time to be outdoors and bathe in the colors and warmth of the Sunlight. The colors are more vibrant and spending more time outdoors allows us to make new discoveries. Maybe even lead us to see things in a new light.
The painting reflects our looking at the hummingbird and the hummingbird looking at us, the moment we meet in the enjoyment of the summertime, one moment in time.
The joyful character of the hummingbirds which are attracted to bright and colorful flowers represents this playful summer vibe for me.
Maybe the joy of discovery makes us feeling like we are in the wonderland of summer together with them.

Materials: We start with fabric milled in California: 95% organic cotton with 5% spandex for a great fit for this summery cap sleeve top. We use fiber reactive, low impact dyes and a low immersion dye process to create a multi colored and textured background. Then we use a non-fading acrylic textile ink and block print the design on the front and back of the shirt. Every shirt is unique and individually hand printed.
Summer to us means warmth and our beautiful garden full of flowers, ripe and delicious veggies, bees buzzing and hummingbirds flitting about. This shirt enables the person wearing it to embody summer whenever and wherever she goes.
